The April issue of the Dutch Journal of Lifestyle Medicine contains an extensive article on the treatment of sleep problems in ADHD. As many as 80% of people with ADHD sleep poorly and this is often because their biological clock is disrupted. As a result, they have difficulty falling asleep at night and also have difficulty waking up in the morning. This delayed sleep pattern worsens ADHD symptoms such as concentration problems and mood swings.

According to the author, Prof. Sandra Kooij (world-renowned for her research into ADHD in adults), chronotherapy, also called chrono coaching, is the indicated treatment to advance the delayed sleep phase. In addition to the correct dose of melatonin, 30 minutes of blue light in themorning can help with getting up and ensure that the severity of ADHD decreases. There are various light therapy glasses for sale, says Prof. Sandra Kooij, but the glasses that have been studied for the treatment of the delayed sleep phase and winter depression in adults with ADHD are the Propeaq light glasses with blue light. These glasses are used for jet lag, winter depression, sleep problems due to a delayed sleep phase, for sleep problems during night shifts and by top athletes to organize the optimal timing of their performances in countries with different time zones. Light therapy therefore also seems effective for ADHD, she concludes.
