The April issue of the Dutch Journal of Lifestyle Medicine featured a groundbreaking article on an important but often overlooked aspect of ADHD: sleep problems.

Did you know that as many as 80% of people with ADHD have trouble sleeping? Many of them suffer from a disturbed sleep pattern, where the biological clock is out of balance. Result: difficulty falling asleep in the evening and not being able to get out of bed in the morning. This delayed sleep pattern also increases ADHD symptoms such as concentration problems and mood swings.

Chronotherapy as a solution

Fortunately, there is good news. According to Prof. Sandra Kooij – internationally known for her research into ADHD in adults – chronotherapy, also known as Chrono Coaching, offers a promising solution. By actively controlling the sleep rhythm with melatonin and light therapy, among other things, both sleep and ADHD symptoms can improve.

An important pillar of this treatment is exposure to blue light in the morning, for 30 minutes. This helps to reset the biological clock, making it easier to wake up on time and start the day with more energy.

Light glasses as an aid

There are now several light therapy glasses on the market, but the article specifically mentions the Propeaq light glasses . These glasses have been studied in adults with ADHD and appear to be effective in a delayed sleep phase.

According to Prof. Kooij, light therapy is therefore not only useful for sleep problems, but also a powerful addition to the treatment of ADHD.
